Question by Mel: I want to start making my own dresses, should I purchase a sewing machine or a serger?
I want to make an informed purchase. I want to make dresses of all materials (except denim most likely). Will it matter which one I purchase? I already understand the difference in machinery, just unsure where to start as a beginner. I plan on starting with some simple patterns. Help?

You need a sewing machine. A serger is not necessary.

I am getting married in September of 2011. I really wanted yellow bridesmaid dresses, but now I am thinking that I want the guys to wear crisp khaki suits. I’m not sure how they would look next to yellow dresses. Do you think that would look good? What colors (BESIDES BLUE) would look nice with khaki? I like blue, but not really for my wedding, plus I always see blue with khaki and I want to be different.

Khaki’s a neutral color. Just about anything looks good with it. If you still want yellow bridesmaid dresses, they’ll look fine with khaki. Also, make sure the groom wants khaki as it’s generally the groom who chooses what he wants the groomsmen to wear.
P.S. I like the idea below of gray suits with yellow bridesmaid dresses. Although khaki goes with just about anything including yellow, I think the gray/yellow or charcol gray/yellow combo will like nicer than khaki and yellow.

I have only been to one homecoming. I only saw tacky bejeweled dresses or slutty dresses from jcpenney that all the girls had.
Is there a correct style for homecoming that would be pretty instead of tacky or slutty?
I have rather large boobs and hips that match. I am an hourglass.

Homecoming should be something cute and pretty! It’s the first dance of the year that you get to show off your prettiness 
The last dance, Prom, is like when you BAM show people the fanciness Get those short dresses for homecoming!

When DEB has sales on dresses (mostly the homecoming and casual wear ones) they are really cheap. I’ve found dresses before for $ 5, $ 10, and some really elegant ones for under $ 20. How can they stay in business when they sell dresses so cheap?

I’ve got some great looking homecoming/cocktail dresses that need to be sold. Most have been worn only one time and are in primitive condition. Let me know if you know a good website (besides ebay because dresses do not sell well on ebay) I can post my dresses for free.

craigslist is a great one! I sold A LOT of stuff using craigslist. One thing I recommend is posting a higher price than what you are really wanting to sell them for that way people won’t expect you to go lower than your original selling price

I’m looking for a last minute bridesmaid dress. I know that with many wedding dress shops you have to order wedding dresses them months in advance… is it the same with bridesmaid dresses at David’s Bridal? It seems like such a large store; I’m hoping that they have a lot of bridesmaids dresses available in varying sizes that I can just try on and take home the same day.

it depends sometimes they have some in stock that you can buy directly, it’s just a luck of the draw with styles and sizes. if not, consider the mall-dillards, jc penny, kohls, target and just try to find matching or even slightly mismatched styles for your bridesmaids…
but if your bridesmaids are averaged sized and don’t usually need any special alterations or anything, and your wedding isn’t very formal (which i’m assuming it’s not on account of the last minuteness..) then you should be okay…

This is something I just got word off and it sparked a curiosity. Believe it or not, Scrubs, the tv show, was the first place I learned of boys wearing dresses to be baptized. Why did this tradition come about?

How old are the boys? Baby boys wear baby clothes to be baptized in and these are similar to dresses.
